Acumen

Napa, CA

Acumen Wines is located in Napa Valley, founded by Eric Yuan, who has a background in development and a preference for Bordeaux-style wines. Yuan, who splits his time between California and China, sought to create wines that reflect a more restrained style compared to the typical Napa offerings. In 2012, Acumen purchased the Attelas Vineyard, originally owned by Dr. Jan Krupp, and later acquired the Edcora Vineyard, both of which are farmed organically. The vineyards are situated at higher elevations, benefiting from cooler temperatures and producing balanced wines with lower alcohol content. Acumen primarily focuses on Bordeaux varietals, along with some Tempranillo, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery's first commercial release was in 2012, and it has since gained recognition for its quality wines. Acumen previously operated a tasting room in downtown Napa, which offered a unique and luxurious experience, featuring art and a relaxed atmosphere. However, as of November 2024, this tasting room is permanently closed. The winery has faced challenges, including the tragic passing of its founding winemaker, Denis Malbec, in 2016.
