Almacerro is a winery located in the Howell Mountain region of Napa Valley, owned by Frank Scherkenbach, a former patent trial lawyer with a lifelong passion for agriculture. He purchased 41.6 acres from Bill and Joan Smith in 2016, who previously cultivated the land as part of W.H. Smith Wines. The vineyard, known as Piedra Hill Vineyard, features 11 acres of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, along with smaller amounts of other varietals. The site is characterized by rocky, nutrient-deficient soils and a high elevation, which can present frost challenges. The winery includes a 3,500 square foot wine cave established in 2003, which is used for both Almacerro's wines and custom crush clients. The winemaking process emphasizes small-lot production and gravity-fed techniques. Frank Scherkenbach hired Matilda Scott as the primary winemaker, with Francoise Peschon as a consulting winemaker. Almacerro produces two main wines: a proprietary red blend and a Cabernet Sauvignon, both of which are vintage-driven and designed for aging. The wines are noted for their complexity and balance, showcasing the unique characteristics of the Howell Mountain terroir.
