Altamura Winery, established in 1985 by Frank and Karen Altamura, is situated in Wooden Valley, approximately 20 minutes east of Napa. The winery initially focused on Chardonnay, with their first vintage receiving a 91-point score from Wine Spectator. Originally located on Silverado Trail, the winery moved to its current 400-acre site in the late 1990s. Altamura is the only winery in Wooden Valley, an area characterized by its natural landscape and limited vineyard development due to scarce groundwater. The Altamura family has deep roots in Napa Valley, with Karen's family owning land since 1855. Frank Altamura gained extensive vineyard experience before establishing the winery, focusing on varietals like Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, which have received acclaim from critics. The winery employs a unique French oak aging program, with wines often aged longer than typical. Their production is around 6,000 cases annually, and they also produce a distinctive Sauvignon Blanc and a low-production Nebbiolo. Visitors to Altamura can enjoy private tastings, often hosted by Frank himself, in a rustic setting that reflects the winery's heritage.
