Arkenstone Vineyards, located on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, was established in 1988 when Ron and Susan Krausz purchased over 40 acres of pastureland. Initially, they had no plans to plant grapes or build a winery, but over time they developed the property into a vineyard and winery. They planted their first vineyard blocks in 1998, focusing on sustainable and organic farming practices across 13 acres divided into 22 unique blocks. Their first vintage was released in 2006. The winery produces around 2,000 cases annually, with half sourced from their estate and the other half from premium hillside vineyards. Arkenstone's winemaking is overseen by Sam Kaplan, who has designed state-of-the-art facilities, including a large cave that is also rented to other small producers. The winery offers a range of wines, including Sauvignon Blanc and various red blends, known for their complexity and aging potential. Visitors can experience relaxed, educational tastings by appointment in a chic salon designed by Susan. The Krausz family remains actively involved, with their son Jake serving as Estate Director.
