Shaw, who established the original winery on the property in the 1970s. After facing financial difficulties, the property was sold in 1991 and later acquired by John and Ellen Benish in 1995, who revitalized the neglected vineyards. The name "Benessere" translates to "well-being" in Italian, reflecting the winery's focus on Italian varietals. The vineyard spans 43 acres, with 36 acres planted to vines, and is known for its unique offerings, including Sangiovese, Zinfandel, and lesser-known Italian varieties like Sagrantino and Aglianico.
