Blackbird Vineyards

Napa, CA

Blackbird Vineyards, located in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, was established in 2003 when Michael Polenske purchased the property from the Trefethen family. Originally a walnut orchard, the nearly 10-acre site is now predominantly planted with Merlot, which thrives in this region. The vineyard has a history of supplying grapes to esteemed wineries and has produced its own wines since 2003, with Aaron Pott as the winemaker since 2006. In 2019, John and Julia Hinshaw acquired a majority stake in the winery, although Polenske retains a minority interest. The Hinshaws also own Greeg Mountain Ranch, which is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackbird Vineyards is known for its proprietary red blends, rosé, and white wines, all of which incorporate Merlot. The wines are characterized by expressive aromatics and a balanced approach to fruit and acidity. Visitors can expect a unique tasting experience, as each wine features a proprietary name and a quote on the label. The vineyard has a strong philanthropic focus, having raised over $4 million for various charities through wine auctions.
