Brown Estate, located in the Chiles Valley AVA of Napa Valley, was founded in 1980 by Dr. Brown and his wife, Dr. Marcela Brown. Originally seeking a rural retreat from urban life, they transformed a neglected property into a thriving vineyard. The estate now spans approximately 450 acres, with 50 acres dedicated to vines, primarily Zinfandel, which remains their flagship variety. The Browns began producing their own wines in the late 1990s after recognizing the quality of their grapes. The winery features a beautifully restored building dating back to 1859 and a uniquely shaped cave created through extensive excavation. While initially not intended for visitors, the winery adapted to host tastings due to growing interest in their wines. Production averages around 7,500 cases annually, with a focus on expressing terroir through their Zinfandels. Brown Estate offers a limited visitor experience at their estate, with a more accessible downtown location for tastings. Their wines, including a range of Zinfandels and a proprietary red blend called Chaos Theory, emphasize fruit-driven qualities and balance, showcasing the unique characteristics of their vineyard's microclimates.
