Burgess Cellars, established in 1972, is one of Napa Valley's oldest privately owned wineries, founded by Tom Burgess, a former Air Force pilot. The winery is located in Deer Park and is known for its historical significance and commitment to quality winemaking. After Tom Burgess's passing in 2017, his sons, Steven and James, took over operations. The winery's founding winemaker, Bill Sorenson, worked there for over 40 years, producing wines primarily from the estate's vineyards and select hillside fruit until 2012. Burgess Cellars has a 30-acre estate vineyard, now called Sorenson Vineyard, and previously owned Haymaker Vineyard on Howell Mountain, which is still in the Burgess family. In 2020, the winery was sold to Lawrence Wine Estates, led by Gaylon Lawrence Jr. Unfortunately, shortly after the sale, the Glass Fire damaged the property, destroying the winery but leaving the vineyards intact. The tasting experience at Burgess was intimate, focusing on a range of wines in a rustic barrel room setting, providing visitors with a personalized experience.
