Burly Wine, established in 2004 by Hank and Bernice McCrorie, is located in Napa Valley. Hank, who retired as Executive Vice President of sales at Pfizer, and his wife, both passionate about California Cabernet Sauvignon, decided to create their own winery after purchasing a retirement home in the area. The winery's name, "Burly," is a nod to Hank's college football nickname, reflecting his athletic background at Lenoir–Rhyne University. The winemaker, Massimo Monticello, has been with Burly since its inception and is known for his enthusiasm and hands-on approach to winemaking. Burly initially focused on producing a 100% varietal Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the historic Simpkins Ranch vineyard in the Coombsville district, which is known for its cooler climate that enhances the complexity of the grapes. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Burly has expanded its offerings to include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. While the winery does not typically host visitors, it has gained recognition for its well-structured wines, including the 2005 Burly Cabernet Sauvignon, which is noted for its layered flavors and aging potential.
