Cain Vineyard & Winery

St Helena, CA

Cain Vineyard & Winery, originally known as Cain Cellars, is situated in the remote Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley. Founded in 1980 by Jerry and Joyce Cain, the winery produces between 10,000 and 20,000 cases annually. The first vintage was a Sauvignon Blanc made in 1981. The winery's architecture was designed by Joyce, who also had a culinary venture selling jellies. Following a devastating fire in 2020 that destroyed the winery and vineyards, the winery is in the process of rebuilding. In the mid-1980s, the Cains partnered with James and Nancy Meadlock, who took full ownership in 1991. The property, which spans 550 acres with about 90 acres planted to vine, was previously part of a large ranch owned by the McCormick family. The vineyards, planted primarily with Bordeaux varietals, are certified organic and yield around 1.5 tons per acre. Before the fire, tastings were by appointment and included personalized tours of the winery and vineyard. The flagship wine, Cain Five, is a blend of the five classic Bordeaux varieties and has been produced since 1985. Winemaker Chris Howell, who has been with the winery since 1990, emphasizes a style that transcends mere fruit expression.
