Calafia Wines

St Helena, CA

Calafia Cellars, established in 1979 by Randle and Mary Lee Johnson, is located in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Randle Johnson, who has been the winemaker since the winery's inception, initially produced a variety of wines but has since focused on a smaller selection, including a unique red blend from their one-acre estate vineyard. The vineyard, planted in 2000, features Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, which are co-fermented for their flagship wine, La Reina. Randle's extensive winemaking background includes roles at notable wineries such as Stags' Leap and Hess Collection, where he developed a reputation for innovative tannin management. Calafia is recognized as the oldest operating "virtual" winery in Napa, producing wine without owning a physical winery. The winery's offerings include a range of wines, such as a Zinfandel sourced from the Rockpile appellation and a Charbono from Mendocino County. Visitors can expect a friendly tasting experience, with wines that showcase a balance of fruit and spice, reflecting Randle's commitment to crafting approachable and enjoyable wines.
