Chateau Montelena Winery

Calistoga, CA

Chateau Montelena is situated in the northern Napa Valley, off Tubbs Lane, providing a tranquil alternative to the busy wine routes. The winery, established by Alfred Lovering Tubbs in the late 19th century, boasts a rich history, including a stone building completed in 1888. Tubbs, a successful businessman, was inspired by the French wine industry and initially produced wine under the name A.L. Tubbs Winery. The winery gained fame with its 1973 Chardonnay, which was a standout at the Paris Tasting of 1976. Currently owned by the Barrett family, with James Patrick Barrett as the winemaker, Chateau Montelena continues to produce a variety of wines, including Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Visitors can enjoy tastings at the main bar without an appointment, while more exclusive experiences, such as private library tastings, require reservations. The winery also offers estate and vineyard tours, enhancing the visitor experience with insights into their winemaking practices. The picturesque setting includes approximately 110 acres of vineyards and a scenic lake, making it a notable destination in Napa Valley.
