Dana Estates, located in Rutherford, Napa Valley, is steeped in history, featuring remnants of a ghost winery established in 1883. The property was revitalized in 2005 when South Korean businessman Hi Sang Lee purchased it after the previous owners, John and Diane Livingston, faced a devastating fire. Under Lee's ownership, the winery was transformed by architect Howard Backen, preserving historical elements while incorporating modern design. The estate spans 30 acres, with 6 acres currently planted, and includes several hillside vineyards known for their exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Dana Estates focuses on producing small lots of single-varietal wines, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, and a unique Sauvignon Blanc from a rare hillside planting. The winemaking process emphasizes traditional methods, utilizing large oak tanks and concrete vessels instead of stainless steel. Visitors can expect a sophisticated tasting experience in a beautifully designed space that reflects both elegance and functionality. The winery is committed to organic farming practices and low yields, ensuring high-quality wines that respect the terroir. Consulting winemaker Philippe Melka has been integral to the winery's success, contributing to its reputation for crafting exceptional wines.
