El Molino Winery

St Helena, CA

El Molino Winery, situated on a historic site in Napa Valley, was originally established in 1871 and is one of the region's earliest wineries. The winery underwent a complete restoration in 1981. It has historical ties to the nearby Bale Grist Mill, where early settler Florentine Kellogg worked. The property has changed hands several times, with notable owners including Captain W. Sayward and Reverend William Whittingham Lyman, who expanded the vineyard in the 1870s. In 1978, Reginald Oliver purchased the winery, marking a revival of winemaking on the site after an 80-year hiatus. The first commercial wines were produced in 1987, focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, reflecting a minimalist winemaking approach. Today, Lily Oliver oversees operations, continuing the family legacy. The winery is located off Highway 29/128, surrounded by native forestland, providing a serene atmosphere for visitors. El Molino specializes in Burgundian varieties and utilizes techniques such as partial whole cluster fermentation and foot treading to enhance wine quality. The winery's label pays homage to its historical roots, featuring an image of the original grist mill.
