Fontanella Family Winery is situated in the southern Mt. Veeder appellation, approximately five miles from Highway 29 and west of Napa. Owned by Jeff and Karen Fontanella, the winery spans 80 acres, with 18 acres planted to vines. Jeff, a UC Davis graduate in Biochemistry who transitioned to winemaking, has experience at notable Napa wineries, including Opus One. The winery, established in 2005, is one of the last undeveloped vineyard properties in the area, previously used for cattle grazing. The winery's elevation of 750 feet provides a unique microclimate, ideal for Chardonnay, Merlot, and select Cabernet Sauvignon clones. Fontanella wines are characterized by a focus on quality, with offerings including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel. The winery has a relaxed tasting experience, conducted by knowledgeable staff, often outdoors overlooking the vineyards. Fontanella has faced challenges, including significant losses from the 2014 Napa earthquake and nearby wildfires in 2017. Despite these setbacks, they have implemented innovative solutions for wine storage and continue to thrive, offering a blend of hospitality and premium wines in a tranquil setting.
