Markham Vineyards, located in Napa Valley, was established in 1874 by Jean Laurent, a French immigrant. Originally named Laurent Winery, it is one of the oldest winery buildings in the region, although it faced closures during Prohibition. The winery has changed ownership several times, with Bruce Markham purchasing it in 1977 and renaming it. Under his leadership, the winery began producing wine again, with notable winemaker Robert Foley at the helm. In 1987, the winery was sold to Mercian Corporation, which is now part of the Kirin Company. Markham Vineyards produces between 100,000 and 120,000 cases of wine annually, utilizing a mix of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels. The winery offers a variety of tastings, including the Heritage Tasting and Estate Tasting, without requiring appointments. The tasting room underwent renovations in 2022, enhancing the visitor experience. The winery's portfolio includes a range of wines, with Merlot being a significant focus, accounting for about 50% of production. Winemaker Kimberlee Nicholls has been with Markham since 1992, contributing to the winery's reputation for quality wines.
