Outpost Winery is situated at an elevation of 2,200 feet on Summit Lake Drive in the Howell Mountain appellation of northern Napa Valley, approximately 10 minutes from Angwin. Founded in 1998 by Terry and Juli Pringle, the winery initially produced Zinfandel and has since developed a strong relationship with winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. The winery has changed ownership twice, with the Dotzlers acquiring it in 2003 and later selling to AXA Millésimes in 2018, which aims to expand vineyard operations while maintaining long-term staff. Outpost is renowned for its organically farmed Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, with 28 acres planted on the 42-acre estate. The high elevation and rocky, iron-rich soils contribute to the concentrated flavors of their wines. Tasting experiences are intimate, catering to serious wine enthusiasts, and are held in various indoor spaces with scenic vineyard views. The winery also produces a rare Grenache and Gentry Wines, a line of 100% varietal Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to its remote location, Outpost limits daily visitors for personalized tastings.
