Ovid. Napa Valley

St Helena, CA

OVID Napa Valley, established in 2005 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson, is located on Pritchard Hill, just east of Oakville. The couple purchased the property after Mark's successful software company, Ovid Technologies, was sold in 1998. The vineyard spans 15 acres, primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and is known for its rocky terrain, which contributes to the unique terroir of the wines. The winery, designed by renowned architect Howard Backen, was completed in 2003 and operates sustainably, being powered by solar energy and certified Napa Green. The winery produces around 1,000 to 1,200 cases annually, focusing on estate red wines such as Hexameter and a Napa Valley Red Wine, along with unique experimental blends. OVID's winemaking team includes notable figures like vineyard manager David Abreu and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland. In 2017, the Duncan family acquired a majority share, but Mark and Dana retained a minority interest. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the winery, and those staying at the nearby Howard Backen Estate gain special access to OVID and other Pritchard Hill wineries. The winery maintains a closed mailing list due to high demand, with limited magnums available for allocation list members.
