Palisades Canyon

Calistoga, CA

Palisades Vineyard is situated in the northern Napa Valley, beneath the Palisades rock formations. The vineyard has a rich history, originally part of the Rancho Carne Humana land grant, and was established in 1871 by Scottish immigrants James and Jeannie Horn. They cultivated one of Napa's early hillside vineyards. The property later transitioned to Italian immigrant Domenico Barberis in the early 1900s, who operated a vineyard and winery until Prohibition halted production. In 1992, Anne Carver and Denis Sutro acquired the property, producing wine under the Carver Sutro label. The vineyard changed hands again in 2015 to Felicia Woytak and Steven Rasmussen, who are dedicated to preserving its historical and natural significance. They cultivate 17.5 acres of organically farmed vines, primarily Petite Sirah, alongside smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and others. The vineyard features diverse soils and a unique landscape, bisected by Horns Creek. In 2021, they launched a new wine project, Palisades Canyon, in collaboration with winemaker Graeme MacDonald, focusing on capturing the vineyard's character through wines that reflect the site's terroir. Visitors can engage with the vineyard's history and natural beauty, including educational programs for local students.
