Prager Winery & Port Works is located north of Calistoga, California, and was originally established as Work Vineyard by Karen and Henry Work in 1976. They produced their first commercial vintage in 1984, primarily focusing on Sauvignon Blanc, while also selling grapes to notable wineries like Duckhorn and Cakebread. The vineyard changed ownership in 2007 when Sam and Lamya Malhotra acquired it. Lamya, who has roots in Iraq, has a deep personal connection to winemaking, inspired by her grandfather's wine production. The Malhotras replanted the vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon, with the first acre planted in 2009 and two additional acres in 2015. The winemaking process occurs offsite, with a focus on balanced, food-friendly wines. Winemaker Kari Auringer, who worked with the winery from 2012 to 2022, emphasizes wines that are enjoyable young yet capable of aging. Prager Winery produces a limited selection of wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with an annual production of around 500 cases. Their wines have received high ratings and are available in select locations, including the Calistoga Inn. The winery does not have a physical tasting room but offers experiences through partnerships with local retailers.
