Prime Solum

Napa, CA

Prime Solum Winery is located on Broken Rock Vineyard, a 96-acre site in Napa's Atlas Peak area, known for its elevation and premium grape quality. The vineyard primarily grows Cabernet Sauvignon, along with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The grapes are highly sought after, often sold to notable vintners. The winery is managed by Bill Hill, a veteran Napa vintner, and his daughter Elana, who has a background in both art and hospitality. Bill Hill's winemaking journey began in 1978, and he has a history of developing vineyards across California. He previously owned William Hill Winery, which he sold in 1992. In 2018, Prime Solum opened its tasting room in Napa's Vichy Springs area, offering a relaxed atmosphere for visitors. The tasting room features original architectural elements and showcases both Prime Solum and Expression wines, which are made from select vineyards and focus on terroir-driven styles. The tasting experience includes a variety of wines, with an emphasis on Bordeaux varieties from Broken Rock Vineyard. Guests can enjoy wine by the glass and purchase snacks, with outdoor seating available. The wines are noted for their quality and aging potential, reflecting Bill's philosophy of minimal manipulation to express the vineyard's character.
