Sawyer Cellars, established in 1991 by Charles and Joanne Sawyer, began with a modest production of Cabernet Sauvignon. Charles, previously the owner of Sawyer Gas, transitioned to winemaking after a visit to Napa Valley in 1984 sparked his interest. He purchased a 40-acre estate in Rutherford, where winemaker Brad Warner, a former Robert Mondavi employee, began producing wine for Sawyer Cellars in 1995. The winery opened in 1999 after converting an old barn on the property. In 2012, the Sawyers sold the winery and estate to Foley Family Wines but retained the Sawyer Cellars label, now producing under 500 cases annually at a business park south of Napa. Their wine style emphasizes small-batch, quality production, with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage blends, often crafted based on taste rather than strict chemistry. Visitors can enjoy personalized tastings in the "Sawyer Room," with options for wine club memberships. The winery is located in the South Napa District, a less commercial area of Napa Valley, allowing for a more intimate wine experience.
