Scarecrow Wine

Rutherford, CA

Scarecrow Winery, established in 2003 by artists Bret Lopez and Mimi DeBlasio, is located in Rutherford, Napa Valley. The winery's roots trace back to Judge Joseph Cohn, Lopez's grandfather, who purchased the estate in 1943. Originally a prune orchard, the property was transformed when Cohn planted Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which were later sold to notable wineries like Inglenook and Opus One. After Cohn's passing, Lopez and his sister inherited the estate. The property was appraised at $5 million but ultimately sold for $33.6 million to Lopez and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, highlighting its value in the Napa wine market. Following the acquisition, Lopez decided to produce wine exclusively from the estate's grapes, which had been under year-to-year contracts prior to the sale. Visitors to Scarecrow can expect a premium wine experience, with the vineyard's history and connection to Hollywood adding a unique narrative to its offerings. The winery focuses on high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the storied heritage of the land and its previous contributions to Napa Valley's wine legacy.
