Sequoia Grove Winery, located in the Rutherford sub-appellation of Napa Valley, was established in 1978 by James and Barbara Allen, who bonded the winery in 1980. James Allen, a former UN interpreter, played a significant role in the Napa wine scene, including helping to create the Rutherford sub-appellation. The winery has a rich history, with the property dating back to the 19th century when it was owned by Dennis Downey. The winery is known for its Bordeaux-style wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, which often includes blends with other Bordeaux varieties. Sequoia Grove has received numerous accolades, including a gold medal for its 1982 Cabernet Sauvignon at the International Wine Competition in London and recognition from Wine Spectator for its 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 2002, the winery has been owned by the Kopf family, who also own St. Francis Winery and part of Domaine Carneros. The charming tasting room, housed in a renovated barn, offers a cozy and intimate experience, with tastings available both indoors and outdoors. Visitors can enjoy a selection of wines, including current releases and limited bottlings, in a welcoming environment.
