Shafer Vineyards

Napa, CA

$140 - $295

Shafer Vineyards, located in Napa Valley, was established in 1978 by John Shafer, who transitioned from a corporate career in publishing to winemaking. The winery began with 209 acres, including some historic vines, but has since replanted its vineyards. In early 2022, Shafer was sold to Shinsegae, a South Korean conglomerate, while key personnel, including winemaker Elias Fernandez, remain to ensure continuity in production. The winery focuses on premium wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from rocky hillside vineyards, which contribute to their acclaimed Hillside Select bottling. Shafer also owns the Red Shoulder Ranch in Carneros, dedicated to Chardonnay production. The winery emphasizes meticulous winemaking practices, including rigorous cleanliness and detailed inspections. Visitors can enjoy various tasting experiences, such as the Terrace View Tasting and the seasonal Hillside Select Experience, which require reservations. The winery is known for its hospitality, offering intimate tastings for small groups. Shafer Vineyards also engages in community initiatives, including donating land for wildlife rehabilitation. The winery's commitment to sustainability is evident through solar energy use and ongoing improvements to its facilities.
