Shypoke Vineyards is situated just south of Calistoga, California, and is operated by Peter Heitz and his wife Meg. The Heitz family has a long history in Napa Valley winemaking, dating back to 1896, although they are not related to the founders of Heitz Cellars. Peter, a fourth-generation grape grower, was raised in Carneros and has a rich family heritage in viticulture, with the original property purchased by his great-great-grandparents in 1903. The winery focuses on producing a variety of wines, including Charbono, Grenache, Sangiovese, and Petite Sirah, with an annual production of around 1,000 cases. Shypoke is particularly known for its Charbono, a variety that has been cultivated on the property since 1904. The winery operates from a bonded garage in Calistoga, where Peter crafts the wines, having previously gained experience at Beringer Vineyards and Turnbull Cellars. Visitors can expect a unique tasting experience, with a selection of wines that reflect both the history of the vineyard and the Heitz family's commitment to quality. The winery's offerings include a well-regarded Chenin Blanc and a playful red blend called Keep, showcasing the diverse styles produced at Shypoke.
