SLOAN ESTATE is a 40-acre winery located in the Rutherford hills of Napa Valley, originally part of the Sacrache Vineyard. The estate features 13 acres of vines, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, along with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vineyard benefits from well-drained soils and a favorable climate influenced by breezes and morning fog. Stuart Sloan, a businessman and philanthropist, purchased the property in 1998, with the first vintage produced in 2000 under winemaker Martha McClellan. The winery includes a visually striking cave designed by Alf Burtelson, featuring Austrian bricks and local stone. SLOAN ESTATE produces around 500 to 600 cases of wine annually, primarily sold through a members-only allocation list, with limited international distribution. Their flagship wine, the Proprietary Red, is a blend of several varietals and is noted for its complexity and balance. The estate also produces a small quantity of a port-styled wine, although it has not been bottled. Visitors can expect a private tasting experience, as many Napa wineries, including SLOAN, do not accommodate public visits.
