Smith-Madrone

St Helena, CA

Smith-Madrone Vineyards & Winery, established in 1971 in Napa Valley's Spring Mountain District, is one of the region's oldest wineries, with its first commercial release in 1977. Owned by brothers Charles and Stuart Smith, the winery is named after the local Madrone trees. The property spans 200 hillside acres, featuring stunning views and vineyards planted at elevations between 1,300 and 2,000 feet on rocky red soils. Smith-Madrone primarily produces Chardonnay, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a focus on dry farming and minimal intervention winemaking. Visitors can expect a personal tasting experience, often conducted by one of the Smith brothers in a rustic setting that contrasts with Napa's more opulent wineries. The winery is known for its award-winning Riesling, which has developed a reputation for aging well, and its Chardonnay, which is fermented in oak barrels. The tasting room showcases a collection of gold medals, reflecting the quality of their wines. Smith-Madrone also has a history of community involvement, having donated wine to the first Auction Napa Valley in 1981. Overall, the winery offers a blend of tradition, quality, and a unique visitor experience.
