Spence Vineyards is situated on Howell Mountain, approximately 1,900 feet above sea level, near Angwin, California. This region is renowned for its red varietals, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard benefits from deeper soils compared to its neighbors, allowing for closer vine planting. Due to its elevation, grapes ripen later than those on the valley floor, enhancing their maturity and tannin balance. Spence Vineyards primarily cultivates three clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and has expanded its portfolio to include wines from other varieties sourced from non-estate vineyards. Founded in 1996 by Allen and Jacalyn Spence, the winery's inception was unplanned, sparked by a winning bid on a barrel of wine at a school auction. They later transformed their property into a working winery after acquiring adjacent land. In 2022, ownership transitioned to Allen's cousin, Dave Spence, and his wife Suzie, who also own a well-known restaurant in Utah. The winery produces three categories of wines, including estate Cabernet Sauvignon and premium selections. Visitors can expect a cozy, barrel-filled tasting environment, showcasing a range of thoughtfully crafted wines.
