Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery

St Helena, CA

Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery is situated in St. Helena, Napa Valley, at the edge of a residential area. The winery, established in 1982 by Mary Novak and her family, focuses on a limited selection of wines, primarily Sauvignon Blanc and two Cabernet Sauvignon varieties. The property has a rich history, originally founded in 1882 by George Schonewald, and has undergone several ownership changes before the Novak family acquired it in 1972. Mary Novak, after her husband's untimely passing in 1977, transformed the vineyard from selling grapes to producing wine. Spottswoode is recognized for its high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, with the latter showcasing a balanced profile between grassy and tropical notes. The winery also experiments with lesser-known grape varieties, including Marselan and several others under the Field Book label. The estate spans 45 acres, with 37 acres planted to vines, and is certified organic. The tasting experience at Spottswoode reflects its family-run ethos, with the current management led by Mary’s daughters. Visitors can expect a welcoming atmosphere and a chance to taste wines that highlight the estate's unique terroir and winemaking heritage.
