Stony Hill Vineyard, located in Napa Valley, is notable for being one of the first wineries established after Prohibition, with its first vintage produced in 1952. Founded by Fred and Eleanor McCrea, the vineyard originally focused solely on white wines, particularly Chardonnay, which they crafted in a non-oaky style that emphasizes fruit and acidity. Over the years, they expanded their offerings to include a Cabernet Sauvignon starting in 2009, which is characterized by its lower alcohol content and food-friendly profile. The vineyard spans 160 hillside acres, primarily planted with Chardonnay, along with smaller amounts of Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The property became certified organic in 2019, and the oldest Riesling vines date back to 1948, potentially making them the oldest of their kind in North America. Stony Hill has undergone ownership changes, being sold to Long Meadow Ranch in 2018 and then to Gaylon Lawrence in 2020. The winery offers a unique visitor experience, set in a serene, agricultural environment, with tastings held in the McCrea's former home or outdoors, providing stunning views of Napa Valley.
