Switchback Ridge is a family-owned winery located at the base of Dutch Henry Canyon, near Calistoga, California. The property has been in the Peterson family since 1914, originally purchased by Mads and Eliza Peterson. After Prohibition, the vineyard transitioned from Zinfandel to prunes and walnuts before being replanted with grape varieties in 1989. The vineyard now spans approximately 21 acres, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah, with a notable 2-acre block of old Petite Sirah vines dating back to 1956. Founded in 1999 by John Peterson and his daughter Kelly, Switchback Ridge honors its historical roots by maintaining the old vines. The winery has seen various winemakers, including Robert Foley and Thomas Rivers Brown, producing small batches of wines that emphasize quality over quantity. Their offerings include estate red wines and recently expanded white wines sourced from the Tofanelli Vineyard. Visitors can experience tastings at their new location in St. Helena, which opened in mid-2025. Switchback Ridge is recognized for its commitment to Napa's viticultural heritage and its production of memorable wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.
