Marilyn Merlot, founded by Bob and Donna Holder in Napa Valley in 1985, has its roots in the couple's earlier experiences with home winemaking starting in 1980. Initially, they produced wine under the name Maneater before settling on Marilyn Merlot, inspired by a dinner conversation. The winery gained fame through its unique branding, featuring images of Marilyn Monroe on its labels, and has become a collector's item, with some early vintages fetching high prices. The winery's first vintage consisted of 2,500 cases made from purchased bulk wine, transitioning to sourcing grapes in 1997. The current ownership is based in China, and wines are primarily shipped there. Winemaker Robert Pepi, who has extensive experience in the industry, oversees production, focusing on youthful wines from premium Napa Valley vineyards, particularly in Rutherford and Yountville. Marilyn Merlot offers a variety of wines, including the Norma Jean series, which features affordable Merlot with labels depicting Monroe's early life. Each wine is released on June 1st, coinciding with Monroe's birthday, and sells out quickly. The winery has also produced a Velvet Collection series with unique labels featuring sultry photos of Monroe.
