Yao Family Wines, established in 2009, is owned by retired NBA player Yao Ming, known for his towering height of 7 feet 6 inches. After a successful basketball career, Yao transitioned into winemaking, inspired by his experiences with wine during his time in the NBA. His first wine, the 2009 Yao Ming Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, was released in China in 2011. The winery sources grapes from six vineyards across Napa Valley, focusing on areas with moderate temperatures. Yao Family Wines produces a range of premium wines, including a Merlot blend and a limited edition red wine for Lunar New Year, showcasing vibrant fruit flavors and complex aromas. The winery's production is around 8,500 cases annually, with distribution in 16 states and parts of China. Previously, Yao Family Wines operated a tasting room in St. Helena, which closed in 2020. Currently, they do not offer public tastings but provide private tastings by reservation. Yao Ming is also active in humanitarian efforts, founding the Yao Ming Foundation and advocating against shark fin consumption. For more information, visit their website.
